How often have you hesitated to set up an appointment with your dentist? If you worry about these appointments, you aren’t alone. However, did you know that individuals with dental anxiety might have a hard time even visiting their dentist? In reality, even the idea of scheduling an appointment can cause an anxiety or even a panic attack. As such, many patients with anxiety tend to avoid scheduling these appointments, allowing any issues they have to become more serious. Fortunately, sedation dentistry can help you overcome your anxiety.

Did you know that sedation may be useful for most treatments, even for something as simple as a routine cleaning? Sedation is also important since it may be enough to help you avoid shaking, nausea, vomiting, and other issues. Sedation can also help patients with an extremely sensitive gag reflex.

Still, there are several different types of sedation, and each could be useful in different instances. For instance, we might recommend mild sedation if you just feel tense when you visit our team. To enjoy this type of sedation, you’ll simply need to take a pill. This will help you relax, but you should still be alert during your treatment. Stronger forms of sedation, such as nitrous oxide, may make you drowsy, but you shouldn’t fall asleep during your treatment. If you decide on either of these options, please arrange a ride home, since you won’t be able to drive yourself. Deeper forms of sedation are available but are generally reserved for surgical procedures.

If you don’t come to regular dental appointments for any reason, you’ll be more likely to have tooth decay, gum disease, and may lose teeth prematurely. If you would like more information about dental sedation, we invite you to give Tammy Perison, DDS Family and Cosmetic Dental Care a call at 716-674-5256. Our team look forward to receiving your call.
